Tan Sri Loy Merit Scholarship Awards
This is one of the most interesting if you are thinking about studying at Taylor College. There are scholarship available and the latest one is Taylor’s Tan Sri Loy Merit Scholarships Awards RM3.5 million to 781 high achievers.
A total of 781 students at Taylor’s College were recently recognized for their academic achievements in the SPM examination with the award of RM3.5 million worth of scholarships and bursaries in the Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Loy Hean Heong Merit Scholarship Award Ceremony 2011.
Apart from the Tan Sri Loy Merit Scholarship, students were also recognized with the Principal’s Award and Top Achievers’ Award. The Principal’s Award is awarded to students who are highly qualified in both academic and co-curricular activities, whereas the Top Achievers’ Award is a merit scholarship awarded to Taylor’s Pre-University students entering the March 2011
intake onwards, who apply with their actual examination results.
For the first time this year, the ceremony also recognized principals and teachers of schools which have consistently produced excellent students. SMJK Katholik headed the list with 49 recipients followed by SMK Seafield with 30 recipients and SMK Damansara Jaya with 28 recipients.
Held in an informal ‘mocktail-style’ setting, the event was graced by Puan Sri Datin Loy Hean Heong, Taylor’s College President Mr Lim Tou Boon and Taylor’s College Chief Operating Officer Mr Thou Kok Cheng.
In his speech to the recipients, Mr Lim Tou Boon, President of Taylor’s College said, “As a Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Loy Hean Heong merit scholar, you are recognised as an individual who has demonstrated outstanding academic capabilities. You are also recognised as an individual who has the potential to excel in your pre-university studies, and one who is ready to be embraced into the fold of the leading universities of the world.”
Initiated in 1993, the scholarship awards students who have excelled in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) / GCE O Level or equivalent examinations. This is in line with the late Tan Sri Loy’s vision where he said: “Where education is concerned, whether there are jobs or not, people have to be educated. You cannot stop people from wanting to gain more knowledge.”
Said Law Ley Kuan, a TSL scholar who attained 10A+ and 1B+ for her SPM, “I’m overwhelmed as this scholarship worth RM18,000 will cover more than half my tuition fees. It helps a lot in lightening my family burden.”
Fellow scholar Tai Xhuang-E added, “Studying at Taylor’s feels like being in one big family. The lecturers sent out positive vibes which made classes very relaxing and interesting. Taylor’s also provides a superb online facility as there is an online student portal where we can exchange information among students and also with lecturers.
Taylor’s College offers four internationally-recognised pre-university programmes at its two campuses in Subang Jaya and Sri Hartamas: the Cambridge A Levels (CAL), Canadian Pre-University (CPU), International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and South Australian Matriculation Programme (SAM).
